The Power of Gratitude: Finding Strength in Hard Times
You don’t truly appreciate everything you have until you lose everything you have.
I remember the stories of people from the Great Depression era. There’s a town close by where I live in the Hill Country of Central Texas. It’s more of a one-horse town now with one stoplight and the remnants of what used to be a 24-hour boom town due to the railroad service that ran through it.
Before the Great Depression, trains ran through town 24 hours a day and there were three full work shifts.
Everything was fine, until it wasn’t.
The stock market crashed. People fell into a mass hopeless frantic. Many families lost everything they ever had.
Unlocking the Power of Gratitude in Hard Times
Yet out of this era emerged what we know today as the “greatest generation”. When everything crumbles, practicing the power of gratitude becomes an anchor for the soul.
My maternal grandfather was born in 1906. He was a stone worker most of his life—self-employed. His wife, my maternal grandmother, was a seamstress and, later in life, worked at a nursing home, taking care of people who were younger than she was.
They came from nothing and they survived and made life work.
Awakening Through Adversity
That resilience inspires me. They were tough because of hard times. Not much scared them because they had been tempered by hardships. True character often arrives through an unexpected awakening scripture moment or a profound shift in perspective.
It takes the lean times to appreciate the plentiful times. It’s a symphony of happy high notes and sad low notes. The symphony of life.
When you learn to lead with gratitude, you begin to see that difficult seasons shape your endurance.
This too shall pass.
Everything but the Divine changes.
Impermanence.
You.
